Choosing the right chiller for your application will help you save money, reduce downtime and increase operational efficiency.
1. Water-cooled chiller
Water-cooled chillers use water from an external cooling tower to remove it from the gaseous refrigerant in the condenser before it undergoes a phase change to liquid.
2. Air-cooled chiller
The air-cooled chiller replaces the surrounding cooling water and uses the surrounding air to remove the heat of the refrigerant in the condenser.
3. Vapor compressor cooler
This type of cooler uses a refrigerant to cool process fluids and spaces. The compressor is used as the driving force to pump the refrigerant around the system.
4. Vapor absorption chiller
There is no compressor in the unit of the vapor absorption chiller. Instead, they use a heat source, such as solar power or waste heat, to drive coolant through the system.
How does an absorption chiller work?
The process starts with liquid coolant in an evaporator, turning it into a gaseous state. The gaseous coolant is absorbed by a concentrated absorbent provided by the generator, such as lithium bromide or ammonia. The diluted solution absorbs the coolant while the cooling water absorbs heat.
A dilute solution of coolant and absorbent flows through a heat exchanger to a generator where it is heated. The coolant evaporates out of solution, condenses, and is sent out again for cooling. The now concentrated absorbent is also recycled.
5. Ethylene glycol chiller
Glycol coolers are special types of coolers that use propylene glycol (a type of antifreeze) in the system. They are widely used in food grade applications such as alcohol production and beer cooling systems.

Glycol coolers operate the same way as standard coolers.
6. Centrifugal chiller
A centrifugal chiller consists of the usual evaporator, compressor, condenser and expansion device, but also has an additional rotating impeller that compresses the refrigerant and sends it around the system. They are especially suitable for medium to large refrigeration operations (150 to 6000 tons of cooling capacity).
