According to the cooling type (condenser type), industrial chillers can be divided into air-cooled and water-cooled. The air-cooled or water-cooled chiller here refers to the heat emission mode of the chiller in the refrigeration process; however, the cooling capacity of the air-cooled or water-cooled chiller is provided by the form of chilled water, so no matter what the structure is, we can call it a chiller.
The structure features of air cooling and water cooling are as follows：
Air cooled chillers are equipped with cooling fans, and the condenser is fin type (copper tube is aluminum fin).
Water cooled chillers are equipped with water-cooled condenser, generally shell and tube condenser, generally need to be equipped with cooling water tower and cooling water pump to use.
The performance comparison between air cooling and water cooling is as follows:
Advantages of air-cooled chiller: easy installation, the unit has been installed with condensing fan, without external cooling tower and cooling water pump, saving investment. Save installation labor and installation cycle; for some small chillers more cost-effective. Easy to move: compared with water-cooled type, there is no cooling water pipe, so it is more flexible and convenient to move. It is suitable for use in areas with lack of water resources or poor water quality (high hardness or salt content).
Disadvantages of air cooled chiller: for example, in the case of high environmental temperature, the energy efficiency is only about 88% of the water-cooled chiller; if the user has a cooling water tower or water pump, the investment cost of the first use of air-cooled chiller is higher than that of the water-cooled chiller; when used, the air-cooled chiller will discharge hot air to the surrounding environment, and the noise of cooling fan will be provided.
Advantages of water-cooled chiller: compared with air-cooled chiller, the efficiency of water-cooled chiller is much higher, even in the case of high ambient temperature, the water cooler can also better cool down the equipment. The cooling performance is stable and can also effectively play a certain throttle role.
Disadvantages of water-cooled chiller: the installation is more complicated, and it needs to be equipped with outdoor cooling tower and water pump to use together. And because the unit works with water circulation to cool the equipment, it needs to do special water management, and the later maintenance and maintenance costs are higher.
